Random Friday: Geek Verticals

Stumbling around the net, I ran into the “funny verticals” meme. These are typically a vertical strip of screenshots pulled from a movie or television with funny captions tacked on. If you do an image search for “funny verticals”, you’ll see a whole slew of them. Be forewarned, there are some very crude and offensive ones. For the lazy, here are a few representative ones I found to be funny. The first example is from the movie Inception: This is another one from Inception. There seems to be a lot using this specific sequence. ...

Top 10 Blogging Clichés of 2010

Dear Reader, I apologize for not blogging much lately. I know, total #fail, but I’ve been so f***ing busy lately. I thought I would start off this new year right with a top ten list FTW! Without further ado, I present my list of the top 10 blogging clichés of 2010. These are things yours truly would never ever do, right? The random photo: Starting off the list is a very common one that even gets the very best bloggers, including a random photo in the blog post completely irrelevant to the topic at hand...

A New Closed Source Viral License

The “copyleft” provisions of the GPL (GNU General Public License) require that any changes or additions to a GPL licensed work must itself be licensed under terms that adhere to the GPL. Critics of these “copyleft” provisions have derogatively labeled the GPL as a “viral” license. Such criticism points out that any code that seeks to incorporate GPL licensed code must itself adhere to the terms of the GPL, thus potentially “infecting” other code with its restrictions. This has caused many developers of proprietary systems to be concerned about any usage of GPL code within their products for...

Geek Your Momma Jokes

Ok, I haven’t had a good track record with making up jokes before. Just see exhibit A, this groaner of an MVC joke . However, I think I did oke recently with a few geeky Your Momma jokes that I can’t just leave to Twitter alone. Here they are: Your momma so fat, Bloatware is her clothing line. Your momma so fat I called her and got a stack overflow. your momma so ugly its just best to forego the "V" in MVC with her. So...

Oh Yes It’s Ladies Night

…and the feeling’s right. If I can muster up the time and motivation, I like to try and post lighter more humorous fare on Fridays such as my recent RAS Syndrome post. On this beautiful Friday day (is that redundant too?), I started off fresh out of ideas (and motivation) so I wasn’t planning on writing a blog post at all, until this was just handed to me. Which Software Blogger Do Girls Like Better? In this post, Nick Berardi takes a quick look around at the demographic information collected by Google’s new ad planner....

If You’ve Ever Been A Consultant, You Understand This

Today’s Dilbert described one of the most challenging problems small consulting companies face. I’m sure Jon, Micah, and I remember experiencing this many times when trying to build and expand Veloc-IT (though Micah probably still gets the pleasure of dealing with this as he’s still chugging along). RAS Syndrome

Yesterday, I wrote a post that contained the phrase “BFFs Forever” in the title. Commenters were quick to point out the redundancy of “Forever” in the title. Nice - BTW, your title is redundant, so your title reads “IronRuby and ASP.NET Best Friends Forever Forever” Thanks! But I had made the very same point in that post. And for those that don’t know, BFF is an acronym for Best Friends Forever. Yes, the “Forever” is redundant in the blog title, but it’s just how people use it. ...

Is Pizza Brain Food?

My family and I recently moved into our new home after a two month stay in temporary housing. One of the perks of moving is when your stuff is delivered from storage, it feels like Christmas again. “Oooh! Look at all the boxes I get to unwrap. Hey! I have a Stereo just like this one!”. I have a tendency to get distracted by the things I’m unwrapping. For example, I found a few of my old college Math textbooks. I started thumbing through the Complex Analysis, Abstract Algebra, and Number theory books and they seemed like total gibberish to me....

So A Model, A View, and a Controller Walk Into a Bar

At the risk of embarrassing myself and eliciting more groans, I am going to share a joke I made up for my Code Camp talk. I was inspired to come up with some humor based on Jeff’s Sesame Street Presentation Rule post. I fully understand his post was addressing something deeper than simply telling a gratuitous joke in the presentation. The context is that I just finished explaining the various dependencies between the Model, View, and Controller within the MVC pattern. UPDATE: Updating this joke as the feedback comes in. The original is at the bottom. So a Model, a View, and a...

Hilarious Quote on Computing Power

Seen in Twitter today CodingHorror: Guitar Hero III for the PC/Mac has truly insane system requirements http://tinyurl.com/2c42fm and USB guitar = dongle :( LazyCoder: @codinghorror So for only 1 billion times the computing power required to put a man on the moon, you too can fake guitar playing. It is a good thing we put all that computing power to good use. Technorati Tags: Humor

Build Traffic With Father's Day Humor

With Father’s Day fast approaching (June 17 this year), and now that I have joined the hallowed ranks of fathers, I thought I’d have a little fun writing about something I posted on my blog two years ago, but has recently popped up on my radar. As a fan of dark humor, I thought this was rather clever and funny at the time. If you take a closer look at the comments, you’ll notice that there are no comments from 2005. They all start in 2007. It turns out that at that time, I didn’t have much traffic. ...

Thank God You're Here

How good are you at thinking on your feet? Last night I watched the premier for a new show called Thank God You’re Here. It’s a sketch improv comedy show starring various comedy television and movie stars, who have to bluff their way through a scene. They are given costumes, a set, but no script. The title of the show derives from the fact that the first line of each skit is "Thank god you’re here!" I love improv comedy and I thought Neuman from Seinfeld was great as well as the dad from Malcom in the Middle. You can watch the premier online. It’s...

Think I'm Just Too White And Nerdy

UPDATE: Via Dare I learned that the video was leaked to YouTube prior to its world premier and has been taken down. You can find the song on Weird Al’s MySpace page. I’ve updated my link. This video from Weird Al Yankovich cracks me up with such lyrical gems like this: The only questionI ever thought was hard.Is do I like Kirk?Or do I like Picard? Mad props to Al whose flow could give Eminem a run for his money.  Click on the image to watch the video on YouTube. Beware, the tune is catchy and you might catch yourself...

Blogging While Buzzed

I’m going to buck tradition and start a new craze just because I mean to. Let’s call it, blogging while buzzed. Perhaps it will be the next meme, fad whatever, but this won’t be the happy byproduct or unintended consequence of an event, but the sole purpose of this blog posting. Yes, I know, I can’t be so pretentious to think that I can start a craze by just saying I’m doing so. But hey! I’m buzzed, I can do what I want! I can try to do all sort of impossible things. Requiring success is not on my radar....
