See Me in Brazil and Argentina in March

Along with James Senior, I’ll be speaking at a couple of free Web Camps events in South America in March 2011.

argentina_flagBrazil_flag

Buenos Aires, Argentina – March 14-15, 2011

São Paulo, Brazil – March 18-19, 2011

The registration links are not yet available, but I’ll update this blog post once they are.Registration is open! Register for Argentina. Register for Brazil. For a list of all upcoming Web Camps events, see the events list.

If you’re not familiar with Web Camps, the website provides the following description, emphasis mine:

Microsoft's 2 day Web Camps are events that allow you to learn and build websites using ASP.NET MVC, WebMatrix, OData and more. Register today at a location near you! These events will cover all 3 topics and will have presentations on day 1 with hands on development on day 2. They will be available at 7 countries worldwide with dates and locations confirming soon.

Did I mention that these events are free? The description neglects to mention NuGet, but you can bet I’ll talk about that as well. Smile

I’m really excited to visit South America (this will be my first time) and I hope that schedules align in a way that I can catch a Fútbol/Futebol game or two. I also need to brush up on my Spanish for Argentina and learn a bit of Portugese for Brazil.

One interesting thing I’m learning is that visiting Brazil requires a Visa (Argentina does not) which is a heavyweight process. According to the instructions I received, it takes a minimum of 40 business days to receive the Visa! Wow. I’m sure the churrascaria will be worth it though.

Good thing I’m getting started on this early. Hey Brazil, I promise not to trash your country. So feel free to make my application go through more quickly.

I am sure you will have a great time in Brazil :) The .NET community here is huge and very enthusiastic. Besides churrasco, don't miss the "pão de queijo" (cheese bread), it's a delicious snack.

Try to find some time and visit the litoral as well! I recommend Florianopolis, halfway between B.A. and S.P., awesome city and beaches.

Yes, the Visa process is a pain. But it's only required because USA also requires a Visa from us, brazilian citizens.

But you are certainly welcome in Brazil! And I hope to attend the event.

And by the way, it's "futebol". :)

@Erick I corrected my post to mention both! :) I know a little spanish, but no Portugese. :)

@Andre, a nerd dinner could work right after the first Web Camps perhaps.

As for the Brazilian visa it is a reciprocity policy thing. They will charge and require whatever US requires to grant a visa to Brazilians.

Believe me, US also gives Brazilians a hard time to get a visa too ;)

I don't personally agree with that policy though...

@Daniel, @Erick I understand now. I'm not pleased with how the U.S. treats foreigners, so I can understand the reciprocity argument. :)

@Fabio hope to meet you too!

I hope your next stop is somewhere around Central America, I'm sure you'd enjoy Costa Rica and we could use a Web Camp :)

Regarding the visa, You don't need one for Argentina, but you'll have to pay the $130 that USA charges to get the Visa.

Very cool to see Microsoft events down here in South America :D
I will try to attend it for sure. Sure there are a lot of things to see here and an year wouldn't be enough to see everything that is cool :)
Meanwhile, I would definitely recommend asking for a 'Picanha' in the churrascaria, trying to see the shore (Florianopolis is amazing), etc.
Looking forward to seeing you guys around here :)

Cheers,
Felipe

Phil, be prepared to pay a $100 fee when you arrive in Argentina. Since the Visa to go to the US for Argentineans is $100, instead of making you get a Visa, they just charge you. You can pay with credit card.

At least it is better than going through a 40 day Visa process

So I get into Argentina on a Sunday and don't have to work on Monday. Where should I go out on a Sunday night? Likewise, I get into Brazil on Wednesday. Is there a hot spot for Wed night I should go to? I love dance music, electronica, etc. But can do a mean salsa and meringue if forced. ;)

Haacked,

As others wrote here, don't miss in São Paulo the dishes: feijoada and picanha, and also the drink caipirinha. The city is called by some as "the unofficial capital of culinary", so you can enjoy great food. The greatest churrascaria (steakhouse) in town is Fogo de Chão (http://www.fogodechao.com/), and they are near Microsoft.

São Paulo never sleeps, and you can find many places to go by night even at week days. If you want to feel at home a bit, and listen some good and old rock and roll or jazz, go to one of the best pubs in town, O'Malleys (http://www.omalleysbar.net/).

Have a great time!

Hey, wednesdey is football day! Maybe you can get a ticket to a Libertadores game, I didn't see its calendar, but there are some "Paulistas" teams there, it's a pitty you won't see a game in Maracanã. =/

I live in Rio and can't go to São Paulo in the mid of week, what is sad, hope you can do something here in Rio soon, though.

Brazil applies reciprocal visa policies to other countries in the world, since the USA ask brasilians for a visa and it's a complicated an lenghty process they also apply the same policy to you, I'm Colombian and our country doesn't ask brasilans for a visa, so they apply the same policy to us, we enter Brazil freely just by showing our passport, no other application required.
