This Just In - Beckham To Play For Los Angeles

David BeckhamLooks like Beckham is moving to La La Land. Sure, he is no longer on the English national team, nor does he start for Real Madrid, but I bet he’s still got some good playing days in those legs, and will definitely be a huge lift for the level of play in the MLS, or at least for the struggling Galaxy.

I'm just thinking I should’ve bought season tickets, because the price probably just went way up.

I hope that means his lovely wife, Victoria, will be joining him in the states!

@Keyvan - Don't be hating! He's the best we got now.
@Dan - Supposedly she's been house shopping in Malibu for a while now. I wonder how many she's bought. One for each outfit?

:-D

My hating is because I'm a Man-Utd fan :-P

But for states soccer someone like Zidane was better. I haven't watched many soccer matches from states but what I could get from those a few games is Americans need more technique.

+ Congratulations for getting him. Anyways he can help you :-)

He sure is good at swinging the balls in but he was NEVER a top player of his own. He is a good team player and delivers good balls and scores freekicks THATS ALL.

So to all those who are exited about see him play do not expect anyway special at all. He is famous for many reasons apart from football too, but he has NEVER won the FIFA best player of the year and will never win that as he will need individual skills which he never had.

But he sure is a marketable guy and will be a good life for LA thats for sure.

I heard this listening to the radio on the way home and thought "but American's don't play soccer!"

But then I remembered "Oh no, Phil Haack does..."

There's still some more good football left in those shoes, trust me. I'm saddened by this because I hoped FC Barcelona could hire him (I'm a Barça supporter!) and I like him: he's a good worker, a good team player and quite a good footballer. He's no Zidane, granted, but he's really good.

He's out of Madrid because Capello, Real Madrid's coach, simply don't like him and keeps him on the bench. I frankly dislike this Capello guy.

@Damien: Yes, Americans *DO* play soccer! Just not as well as the rest of the world, yet.

@Max: He doesn't need to be a top player individually. If he raises the level of his teammates with great passes, he'll make a big impact. I'm not expecting Ronaldinho action from him, I'm hoping to see the Galaxy start playing more beautiful soccer. We'll see.

I think the (slightly veiled) reason for this move is to bring the game of football (NOT soccer, football without wimpy padding) to the heathen shores of america.

It's a good move because DB could be seen as an ambassador of world football. Of course no one else in the world is at all interested in 'american football' so they'd better get interested in what the rest of the world watch if they want to join in !

You never know, maybe rugby will become popular ? Do they have rugby in america ?

As someone who hails from Manchester and a commited Man U fan I have massive amount of respect for Becks. He's still the best deadball kicker in the world. Finishing his career in the US is the very best place for him, history dictates that the very best of footballers finish their playing careers there and we could very well see him back in the premiership coaching (my money is that some day he will return to Man U). Promoting football to younger ages is something that Becks believes in and he will be a massive boost to boosting the appeal of football to the American younger audience.

I don't get it - the L.A. Galaxy has £128m to pay Beckham to turn up and they are struggling in MLS? Yikes. Rumours today include that Beckham will draw more of his madrid teammates over to MLS - Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo - to close out their twilight years. Sounds like Pele and crew in the 70s.

Still, those four would cost more than an entire lower division over here in England. Whoever owns the Galaxy better hope he gets it right. He should hire Vinny Jones too for some entertainment.

Well the Galaxy doesn't have that kind of money. His salary is *only* going to be $10 Million a year. The rest of that money is a package put together by AEG and Addidas. So Beckham gets a cut of licensing, endorsements, etc...

@ Keyvan. Yeah, I would recommend Zidane too.

Players would also have to be advised to wear a vest to protect against head-butts ;)

He's still a very good player. The vast majority of clubs in England and Europe would have loved to have signed him if they could have afforded him. I just hope he's making the move for the right reasons, and not just for the large pile of cash. He's arguably the only player with the potential to give MLS such a massive lift. He mightn't be terribly intelligent, but he comes across as a nice and genuine guy. As long as his idiot wife stays in the background, both LA Galaxy and MLS have got themselves a wonderful signing!

All I can say is that is one hell of a payment for coming to the States. I think he will help the MLS, but I dunno how much.
