Year of the Golden Pig

Not too long ago I announced that my wife and I are expecting a baby this year as part of our world domination plans. Adding fuel to our plans is the discovery that this year is a special year according to the Chinese Zodiac.

It is not only the year of the Pig, it is the Year of the Golden Pig. According to Chinese Folklore, this is an event that occurs once in every 600 years and will ensure that a baby born on this year will experience a prosperous and wealthy life.

This legend is so popular, that Korea is expected to have a 10% increase in birth rate this year, which is apparently much needed as its birth rate is extremely low.

I’m not going to start taking loans against my child's future wealth just yet as many Chinese foklorists and historians doubt this belief.

However, a folklore professor, Joo Young-ha, at the Academy of Korean Studies rebuts the theory. He explained that if the year 2007 is the golden pig year which comes every 600 years, there should be records about the special year written in the ‘Taejong Sillok,’ archives of King Taejong. King Taejong ruled the Joseon Dynasty 600 years ago. But there are no such records, which makes him believe the myth was made not long ago.

Well I have a thought for you Joo Young-ha. Quit raining on our parade! Perhaps the Year of the Golden Pig happens every 600 years from now.

I think you should double check the "600 years." I have read and heard from other sources (including local Chinese--I live in Shanghai) that the Golden Pig happens every "60 years." The reason is there are 12 zodiac signs/years that rotate with the 5 elements--earth, fire, water, wood, and gold. FYI...

Chinese Zodiac says that the Year of the Golden Fire Pig comes only once every 600 years and rumor has it, 2007 is this special year. It is Golden because the combination of elemental Fire, the sign Pig, and Yin/Yang components bring this year once every six centuries!

It is said that children born under this sign will live in comfort as wealth and luck are always near. The Fire Pig is known to have traits of wealth, prosperity, luck and fertility.

Seems it's the year of the "Golden Fire Pig"...

The first few months of '07 should be interesting: I'm married to a Chinese Singaporean; no pressure from the family to have a 'Golden Pig' baby -- just to get busy and have a baby! We'll see what we can do... and, hey, might as well strike while the fire is golden.

Gong Xi Fa Cai!

"Fire is red or yellow, and this is associated with gold; in China, for example, red is considered a lucky color, and money is traditionally given in red envelopes. Accordingly, the Year of the Fire Pig becomes the Year of the Golden Pig. This occurs only once every 60 years, and is considered a particularly auspicious time to have children. It is believed children born during a pig year will be particularly successful in acquiring material wealth. Those born during a "golden pig" year, doubly so."

"According to Chinese folk customs, 2007 is the 'Year of Gold', one of the five elements, and also is the 'Year of the Pig', a sign on the Chinese zodiac. The pig is regarded as good luck for a good life. A 'Golden Pig' baby has the benefit of being born under two lucky signs."

Hmmm - seeing I turn 60 this year (and if the 60 year theory is correct) I should have had a very fortunate life. I have not seen wealth yet; had bowel cancer (but did recover); my life has been stressful - but I'm not in the "looney bin" (yet) - so is that fortunate? I guess it depends if you are a pessimist or optimist? Or maybe all the good things are still to come?

I just found this in another Korean Article, about the 600 years vs. 60 years, I guess it is a matter of who you happen to be talking to.

"There are 12 animals in the Asian horoscope, and each sign comes around once every 12 years. Put together in a combination with elements such as water, fire and earth, each year is characterized to certain special meaning. Twelve different signs with five elements means you have 60 possible combinations.

The golden pig year — calculated through yin-and-yang theory (and called a myth by the Korea Times) — happens only every 600 years. It is said that children born in the year of the golden pig will have great fortune. And it's a huge marketing event in South Korea."

There is no element of "Gold". The element is "Metal". "Golden" refers to the colour of the "Fire" element, which in itself is auspicious (but aren't they all). Therefore this is the year of the Fire Pig but is also known as the "red" or "Golden" Pig. However, it is still a very auspicious year. By the way, the New Year actually started on 4th February (firts day of Spring), due to the previous year being a leap year (and hence an extra month), the official celebrations started a month later. So those born on or after 4th Feb are / will be "Golden Piglets"!. Happy New Year to one and all and much health, wealth and happiness to all the little piglets.

I heard 60 and 600 being thrown around as the frequency of teh "GOlden Pig". I think 60 is the proper number because of the 5 element and 12 animal cycle (5x12=60). And I would agree with the earlier post about this being the Fire element.

In any case, we are expecting our own "golden pig", although my wife and I joked that we're just having a "BBQ pork" :), because in reality it's just a Fire Pig.

Also, too many people assume the new animal starts on Chinese New Year, but it's on the "First Day of Spring", which is always Feb 4th of the solar calendar. Other important dates like the Winter solstice (Dong Zhi) also happens to fall the same day each year on the solar calendar.

I think that people should be allowed to believe what they wish to believe. Modern life is getting harsher as the years continue on and finding a special genuine happiness (whatever that source) shouldn't be a crime.

Let's face it, 99 percent of religions have parts where there seems to be just that little bit of hypocrisy and a few conflicting stories.

Why are there people that carry on these seemingly mindless 'stupid' beliefs? Because it's something to look forward to. I raise my eyebrow at the individual who came on here acting as if Christianity is some kind of no nonsense, one hundred percent, factual religion and fobbing the beliefs of the Chinese people - as if it were all tribal mumbo jumbo.

With my annoying critical adult mind I've seen conflicting parts to all religions and beliefs i've come across but I don't go out of my way to offend those people.

If someone tries to force their belief onto me then it's another story. I won't bite my tongue and politeness goes out the window! (haha)

Let's learn a nice phrase:

"Live and let live"!

The Fire Pig became a Golden Pig because of Emperor Wu De of the Tang, who switched Chinese currency to ingots (zhu). In 627 CE, the first year of the reign of Zheng Guan was known as the jin zhu (gold ingot) year. This was a Fire Pig year, and the character for pig (zhu) is a homonym for the zhu that is "ingot." Phonetics turned a gold ingot year into a golden pig year. Memories of the prosperous Tang era, and the correspondence with a new reign, an ingot and a pig, sealed the auspiciousness of the occasion.

# re: Year of the Golden Pig
the year of the pig 2007 is a fire pig year

the elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and air rotate of a 12 x 5 (60 year) cycle.

there is an additional aspect to the year which is the
heaven element (which this year is gold)

so it is a golden fire pig year

(i should know, i am a metal pig and i have been waiting a long time for this year to come around)

the next time i or anyone can expect to
be in their exact year (animal/element) is on your 1st, 60th & if very lucky 12th birthday

it gets complicated - you also have a companion animal which is like your inner guide. this can be any of the animals in the twelve depending on a 2 hour slot in a 24 hour day that you were born.

hope this clears things up

pig year is the end of the cycle of 12
therefore it is a year of celebration auguring change.

auspicious, good for business and generally for having a great time - not just for those born under pig but for everyone.

pigs are loyal, calm, trustworthy and lucky to have around.

the actual animal sign is wild boar. a formidable opponent to any creature, armed with sharp tusks and a
temper not to be trifled with. beware predators, mess with a pig and risk a mortal wound when you could attack something smaller.

the chinese see that the pig eats all day, sleeps all day and has no cares in the world.

a lucky animal indeed.

the reason it is 12th in line (apparently there are many traditions) but the one i like is that the
other animals asked the pig to justify - it said it's meat was very tasty. the other animals finding this very distasteful ordered the pig to the back of the line. probably more correct in the nature of the pig

is that just as buddha was about to close the race, ( the following day) the pig casually rolled up.

what happened ? says buddha - i got hungry, stopped for something to eat and then fell asleep!

so that was that, the pig was the last animal to enter the chinese zodiac.

600 years? Golden pig? Mate, I dunno where you get your info, but it's well bodgy. I won't repeat the umpteen corrections that others have given you, except to say last golden pig year was 1971.

Anyway, here's how to work out which element maps to which year. The last digit of the year tells you the element, like so:

0,1 => gold (aka metal)
2,3 => water
4,5 => wood
6,7 => fire
8,9 => earth

Example: Current 60-year cycle started in 1984, year of the wooden mouse. 2008 is year of the earth mouse.

Moreover, she is amazingly self-reliant and hard-working, so she has never gotten into debt. If my wee Piggy is anything like Amy I'll consider that plenty "lucky". Congrats on your fatherhood, BTW. Corrections: According to several sites on the web the last year of the Golden (fire) Pig was Jan. 1947 - Feb. 1948. Not 1971. That was a Metal Pig. Lot's of places are quoting it wrong. However, it is a yin fire year and sits on water, which means a year of strife and opposing forces in the babies' lives. The good news is the Golden Pig luck is supposed to help them overcome these obstructions and come out on top. Hmmmm ... The Pigs I know have seemed to have done well in life. I am not trying to convince anyone this is true (it's mostly fun) but my Dad the Golden Pig did overcome being born in a coal mining camp of Eastern Kentucky and went to Med School and in general has landed in clover ... clover that he work his arse off for that is. So I've got my fingers crossed that my wee Piggy is as 'lucky' (i.e. smart & driven) as her grandpa.

My third child arrived on 2nd Oct 2007. She is truely special to us, we beleived it's our 'golden babe', and she was bless by Pope Benedict on 20th July 2008 at Randwick, Sydney. Is that great to start with for little Golden Pig.

my son was born april 1 2007 and he has had so much cruelty and tragedy in his young life, I can only believe he will be blessed 10 fold for what he has endured and will be all the more compassionate and wise for it. there must be a fair God out there who will bless my golden pig because he is so deserving.

This may help a few people...

It is not just because 2007 was fire pig, but fire gold pig year. It is based on three things, not two. So not every 60 years which is why it is special.

Hi Jenny,

Thanks for the info above. It is very interesting but how do you know when is the golden year? How do you calculate the combination element to arrive at the golden year as gold doesn't seem to go in a pattern? ie. When is the next golden year?

Can you provide beyond 2020? Also why does your calculation starts 4th Feb and ends 3rd Jun?

Each sign has a golden year for that sign and element it cycles 10 instances every 10 Fire Pig year from a reference is a Golden Fire Pig Year 1 in 600 Fire pig is 1 in 60 and Pig is 1 in 12.
