Coder’s Block

block I’ve heard of writer’s block, but never dealt with coder’s block until today. Seriously, I’ve always been able to just unleash that kernel of code simmering inside in a big pop of keyboard slamming.

As an aside, my wife and her friend happened to walk in on a coding session one day and they remarked that they could easily do what I do. Why, I’m simply stabbing at the keys at random! They proceeded to mimic me jamming the keyboard as an insane pianist attempting to perform a Liszt piece at twice the speed might do. Hmm, hopefully my clients don’t find out and replace me with a monkey.

But today, alas, I’m tipping my head to the side, and nothing is pouring out. Zip. Guess it’s time to take a break and maybe buy some books.

I've had this. I call it burnout.

Nah, probably just need a beer or two. Or maybe the gods of programming are mad at you for pooh-poohing the OO patterns. Write three Factories, one Decorator, and half-a-Strategy, and you should be good as new.

Well if it appeases the gods, I just bought Refactoring to Patterns and Head First Patterns... So lay off my back! ;)

The same thing happened to me after I went on vacation and moved. It lasted about three weeks. I finally got back into the grove by going through the ASP.NET 2.0 beta 2 classes with reflector, and by brushing up on C and C++ (which I haven't used in over a year).

Ehhh, try learning a new language or just writing a little helper function for your current project. That usually is enough to break me out of a coding funk.

Thanks for the tips. I think getting sleep is probably my best bet. It's more a matter of motivation than really being blocked. I bought a few books and reading them is getting me pumped. Plus my wife is back home, which is helpful.

Happens to me sometimes... then I open photoshop or fruityloops and attemp to do something artistic. http://edsid.com/blog/archive/2005/05/15/453.aspx

Refactoring To Patterns is by far the best GoF Design Patterns book I know of (especially if you're mostly C#), the Head First books look awesome, their weblog is amazing.
